The name of the village comes from the Latin “Mons” (mount) and “Scutarius” (shields maker). Montescudaio is a small village about 12 km from the sea which has had a relevant importance during the centuries thanks to its strategic position.
Nowadays you can enjoy the breathtaking panorama from the Piazzale della Chiesa (Church Square), above all from the watch tower “La Guardiola”.
In clear days you can see the Cecina river valley, the blue of the Tyrrheanian Sea and the islands of Capraia, Gorgona and Elba.
If you walk around from Piazzale della Chiesa along narrow alleys and through arches and gates in search of typical cellars, you will feel the need to come back next holidays. In the heart of the village you will discover restaurants which will tempt you with Tuscan typical specialities to be paired with Montescudaio DOC wines.
The territory surrounding Montescudaio is famous for the production of quality wine; wine producers proudly present their products during the annual Wine Festival, taking place each year the first week-end of October.
